Foam is everywhere in our lives, but the characteristics of each type can differ significantly.
Flexible polyurethane foam is among the most versatile materials we have today, appearing in countless places! It’s often used for cushioning in furniture and bedding, along with carpet underlay, packaging, insulation, soundproofing, and many other applications.
What does the density of foam mean, and what makes it significant?
Foam density, measured in pounds per cubic foot, is determined by weighing a 12-inch cube. Generally, foams with higher density are more durable and resilient than those with lower density. Even if two foams have comparable compression or ILD ratings, the denser foam will typically last longer before exhibiting sagging.
Frequently Asked Foam Questions
- Foam Density measures the weight of foam per cubic foot, which reflects its quality and durability. A higher density typically indicates better support and increased longevity of the foam.
- Foam Firmness, commonly evaluated using ILD (Indentation Load Deflection), reveals how soft or firm the foam feels. This characteristic is separate from density; a high-density foam can still feel soft, while a low-density foam may feel firm .
When measuring foam for couch cushion replacement, you can use the following methods:
- Remove the existing foam and measure its length, width, and thickness. It’s advisable to order foam of the same size, with the fiber wrapped in the same orientation (typically Top, Bottom, and Front).
- Measure the fabric from seam to seam to determine length, width, and thickness. Be sure to add 0.5 inches to all measurements for a secure fit and wrap it in fiber.
High-density foam is characterized by its increased weight per cubic foot, which indicates more material and better overall quality. An example of this is the life span of a 2.6lb foam that can last 10+ years for a seating application before it begins to soften significantly compared to a 1.5lb foam that would last about 2 years for a seating application. Thus, higher density foam provides outstanding support and durability, making it well-suited for high-traffic environments and intense usage.
Designed for superior bounce and quick recovery, High Resiliency (HR) foam offers outstanding support and comfort. It is frequently used in premium mattresses and furniture because of its durability and ability to enhance comfort.
Wrapping foam in Dacron or fiber comes with multiple advantages:
- Improved Comfort: Adds a soft layer that increases the plushness of the cushion.
- Refined Aesthetic: Helps retain the cushion’s shape and appearance by preventing the foam from being visible through the fabric.
- Durability: Functions as a protective barrier against wear, extending the cushion’s lifespan.
